Koper Changes the Import Calculation

For a Slovenian buyer, the nearest useful container gateway is also one of Central Europe’s strategic ports. That makes the route part of the product decision, not an afterthought.

One discharge point for the domestic market

Koper puts the container inside Slovenia before inland delivery begins. Ljubljana, Celje and Maribor are served by regular rail connections from the port, while road delivery remains practical for smaller project orders. Ask for the current sailing and inland leg together — a cheap ocean rate can become an expensive quotation if the last movement is ignored.

A domestic order can become a regional stock programme

The Port of Koper sits on the Baltic–Adriatic and Mediterranean TEN-T corridors and publishes regular rail connections into Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland. For a distributor serving more than Slovenia, one incoming container can support several nearby markets. Tell us the onward countries before we load so lengths, colour mix and packaging can be planned as one programme.

The port does not remove the need for a real landed calculation

Ocean freight, terminal handling, customs clearance, inland delivery and local VAT are separate lines. We quote the boards and the agreed shipping term; your customs broker confirms the tariff classification and current charges. That division should be written into the quotation before the order is placed.

One Small Country, Four Outdoor Conditions

Slovenia sits where Alpine, Mediterranean, Dinaric and Pannonian influences meet. The project postcode matters more than the country name.

Alpine northwest

Bled, Bohinj, Kranjska Gora and the Julian Alps bring snow, freeze–thaw cycling and large day-to-night temperature changes. Snow load belongs to the structural frame, not to a marketing claim about the board. Give the engineer the board metre weight and the full build-up; allow drainage to remain open when meltwater arrives.

Coast and Primorska

Koper, Izola, Piran and the Karst edge combine sun, salt air and exposed sites. The composite board does not corrode, but clips, screws, joist connectors and post bases can. Specify the metal grade for the exposure and obtain local engineering for wind-loaded terraces and elevated decks.

Central basins and continental east

Ljubljana’s basin can stay damp and cold in winter, while Maribor and the Pannonian east have a wider seasonal swing. North-facing decks dry slowly and develop surface algae sooner. Fall, ventilation, clear gaps and scheduled washing matter more here than a stronger cleaning chemical.

Dinaric and karst landscapes

High rainfall and fast-changing weather make drainage the first drawing decision. The board gaps only clear surface water; the build-up below still needs a path to an outlet. Do not close a deck cavity with a sealed fascia and then expect it to ventilate.

What the Board Is Made Of, and What the Surface Does

The specification starts with the construction, not the colour name.

60% wood powder, 30% HDPE, 10% additives

On the capped range a co-extruded polymer shield wraps the WPC core. The shield is the wearing layer and carries the fade, stain and scratch resistance. Classic boards are uncapped, which lowers cost but changes the cleaning and weathering expectations.

Sections and textures are separate decisions

A complete specification names the range, profile, surface texture and colour. The full profile schedule is on the models page. Do not carry a span or metre weight from one section to another simply because the face width looks similar.

The gaps are working parts of the deck

Side and end gaps allow thermal movement and carry water off the face. They are not cosmetic tolerances. In a wet Alpine or Dinaric project, blocked gaps turn meltwater and rain into standing water; at a long summer terrace, missing end gaps can turn expansion into buckling.

Colour and texture are selected independently from the profile.

Judge the sample where the project will be built

Alpine light, shaded Ljubljana courtyards and the Adriatic coast do not read the same colour the same way. Put the physical sample outdoors at the project, wet it, let it dry and look at it at midday. For barefoot coastal and pool terraces, start with lighter tones because every dark exterior surface absorbs more heat.

Order the whole visible area in one batch

Pigment is mixed into the extrusion run, so separate batches of the same named colour are not identical. Order one visible area together and keep spare boards from that batch. This matters on hotels and spa projects installed in stages.

Where It Goes in Slovenia

The domestic market is compact, but the project types are technically different.

Alpine hotels, lake terraces and wellness projects

Bled, Bohinj and mountain resorts need careful drainage, documented slip performance and a substructure checked for the actual snow load. Capped profiles are the usual starting point for hospitality because cleaning, wet foot traffic and colour consistency matter more than the lowest board price.

Coastal hospitality and residential terraces

Around Koper, Izola, Piran and Portorož, specify the metal fixings for salt exposure and choose colour with summer surface temperature in mind. An elevated sea-view deck also needs local wind design; we supply the board properties, while the project engineer designs the support and anchorage.

Urban balconies, courtyards and roof terraces

Ljubljana projects are often governed by available height, drainage outlets and whether the waterproofing can be penetrated. Where drilling is not permitted, ask about deck tiles or a pedestal build-up and provide the finished threshold height before the profile is chosen.

Gaps and double joists

5–7 mm between adjacent board sides, about 5 mm at a wall, and 3–5 mm at butt joints are the catalogue starting points. Butt joints sit on double joists so each board end has its own support. Final spacing and support centres must match the exact profile and project conditions.

Accessories, with sizes

The system includes starter clips, plastic hidden clips, expansion screws, 50 × 50 × 3000 mm corner trim, 40 × 30 × 3000 mm WPC joist and 40 × 25 × 2900 mm aluminium joist. The metal grade still has to be specified for coastal or de-icing-salt exposure.

Approximate production capacity is 2,000 tonnes a month. Send the volume and required arrival date; we answer with a production slot rather than treating lead time as a slogan.

Dies are ours

We own and cut the tooling used on our extrusion lines. That permits market-specific sections and gives us direct control over dimensional checks and repeat production.

A batch report travels with the goods

Routine checks are recorded before dispatch and the report travels with the shipment. Keep it with the commercial documents; it is often the first document requested on a public or hospitality project.

What We Do for a Distributor

A first order can be smaller than a container

The minimum order is 70 m². That lets a Slovenian distributor test one profile, colour, delivery route and documentation pack on a real project before committing to container stock.

Samples are free

You cover the courier and we credit it against the first order. Ask for a sawn sample so the cap construction and core are visible, and compare a light and a dark colour outdoors.

A per-unit quotation within 24 hours

Send profile, colour, quantity, destination, project postcode and required date. We return a unit price and identify which technical documents apply to that exact section.

Private label and regional stock planning

OEM packaging, mixed colour programmes and market-specific sections are available for discussion. If Koper will feed several countries, tell us the split before packing so the pallets and documents follow the distribution plan.

Slovenia: Route, Transit and Terms

The current sailing and inland route are confirmed at quotation because services and freight prices change.

Freeze, Thaw, Rain and Coastal Exposure

The governing condition changes over a short distance in Slovenia.

Freeze–thaw is mainly a drainage problem

The board can tolerate cold; the vulnerable condition is water trapped in the build-up when temperatures cross zero. Maintain fall, keep board gaps clear and avoid sealed perimeter details that stop the cavity breathing.

Snow load belongs to the support design

A decking board is only the wearing surface. Snow, people, furniture and the self-weight of the boards all go into the joists and supports. We provide the board metre weight and profile data; the project engineer checks the full structure for the site.

The coast changes the metal specification

Salt air and exposed coastal sites do not make WPC rot, but they can shorten the life of unsuitable clips and fasteners. Put the stainless grade and every exposed connector into the specification rather than writing only “composite deck”.

Wind exposure is a local engineering question

The bora and other local winds can make elevated coastal terraces demanding sites. We do not publish a universal wind rating for a deck assembly. The anchorage, pedestal restraint, edge details and balustrade must be designed for the actual site by the responsible local professional.

Near Water, Read the Slip Number Properly

Lake terraces, spas, pools and the coast require the test method to match the use.

What our published result is

R10 under AS 4586-2013 Appendix D, ramp method at 15 degrees, Intertek report 230625005SHF-001, measured on profile ZSGJ138H23A. It is a shod wet result and belongs to that profile.

Barefoot wet areas are a different question

A barefoot pool surround uses a different method and scale. Do not convert one result into another. Send the project requirement and we will state whether the existing evidence matches; if it does not, that gap should be known before the board is specified.

Three Things That Go Wrong When Europeans Import WPC

These are installation and purchasing errors, not cosmetic complaints.

The frame is set out for timber

Composite support centres are profile-specific and can be tighter than the installer’s timber habit. Put the permitted support spacing on the drawing before the frame is built.

The end gap disappears

A long board run still moves with temperature. Missing end clearance can turn expansion into buckling; butt joints also require two supports, one for each board end.

A later batch is expected to match

Pigment is mixed into the extrusion run. Order the visible area together and keep spare boards from that batch. A replacement ordered years later will not be an exact colour match.

Warranty, and How a Claim Works

Stepped, not flat

Capped co-extrusion carries a 15-year limited schedule and classic uncapped 10 years. The covered value reduces in bands over time; ask for the schedule rather than reading only the headline number.

It starts at the destination port

Cover runs from the date the goods arrive and are signed for at the destination port. Keep the arrival record, invoice and batch documentation together.

The batch documents matter

A claim is assessed against the product and schedule supplied with that batch. Photographs, installation layout, maintenance history and retained sample boards make the investigation faster.
