No Seaport: The Port Choice Is Yours, and It Is Not a Detail

Every other market page on this site starts with the product. This one starts with logistics, because in Austria the container lands in another country and how it gets to you changes both the timing and the landed cost. Get this right at the quotation stage and the rest is ordinary.

Four realistic routes, and they suit different halves of the country

The container can discharge at a North Sea port — Hamburg or Bremerhaven — and come south by rail. It can discharge at Rotterdam or Antwerp and come up the Rhine corridor, which tends to suit the west. Or it can discharge on the Adriatic at Trieste or Koper, where rail runs inland from the quay towards Villach and Graz.

Which is shorter depends on where in Austria the goods are going, not on which port sounds closer to China. A delivery to Bregenz and a delivery to Klagenfurt have genuinely different best answers. That is why the first thing we ask for is the delivery postcode.

What we can and cannot decide for you

Your forwarder books the service and owns the inland leg — we quote against whichever routing you choose rather than telling you which is cheapest, because the inland rate depends on their contracts, not on ours. What we do is make sure the documentation matches the route from the start, so nothing gets reissued at a border. Give us the postcode and the two or three ports you are considering and we will put the quotation together on that basis.

One practical consequence for a distributor

If you hold stock for both ends of the country, it can be worth splitting a programme across two discharge ports rather than trucking everything from one. That only works if it is planned at the order stage. Tell us the split when you enquire and we quote it as one programme with two deliveries.

Austria: Route, Transit and Terms

Loading is Nansha or Yantian, both in Guangdong, both within trucking distance of the plant. The discharge port is the open variable.

Altitude Decides the Specification, Not Latitude

Austria is a small country with a very large vertical range. The useful way to think about a job here is not north-versus-south but low-versus-high — and the two ends want different answers from the same board.

Higher up, the sun is harder on the surface

UV exposure increases with altitude, and a terrace at 1,500 or 1,800 m takes noticeably more of it than one in the Danube valley. On the capped range the co-extruded shield is the layer that carries the fade resistance, which is why we would put the capped grade on a mountain terrace and are happy to discuss the classic range for a sheltered courtyard in the city. Snow cover adds to it — a snowfield reflects light back up onto the underside of everything around it, so a mountain deck gets worked from both directions in spring.

The daily swing is wider than the annual average suggests

At altitude a clear day can run from below freezing at dawn to warm in the afternoon sun, repeatedly, through the shoulder seasons. Composite moves more along its length than timber does, and it is the cycling rather than the extremes that finds an under-gapped deck. Work to the upper end of the installation ranges: about 5 mm to a wall, 3–5 mm at butt joints, 5–7 mm between board sides. Boards laid on a cold morning are at their shortest — that is the trap.

Snow load is a structural question, and it belongs to your engineer

Alpine snow loads are set by your own national code against the altitude and the location, and whoever designs the substructure will already be working to them. What we give you is the input: the metre weight for the profile you are buying, in writing with the quotation — it runs from 2.00 to 7.27 kg/m across our deck schedule, so it is not a figure to assume. The deck's own dead load and the imposed snow load are then their arithmetic, not ours.

And in Vienna, none of the above is the problem

A city balcony or an inner-courtyard terrace is a different job: the constraints are the threshold height, getting material up through a stairwell, and the neighbours. That is usually a tile or low pedestal build-up rather than a framed deck — the pedestal system page covers heights, falls and drainage access in detail.

Sloping Sites, Steps and Getting Material to the Job

Two things come up on Austrian enquiries that barely appear on our flatter markets: there are a lot of steps, and the last hundred metres of delivery can be the hard part.

Stair treads are a separate section with a tighter support spacing

Our stair board is ZSGJ138S22.5 at 138 × 22.5 mm, woodgrain, same 60/30/10 material as the deck boards. It is not a deck board cut to length — it is its own profile, it carries a tighter support spacing than a deck board, and it fixes with its own start clips onto a steel joist rather than the aluminium one used under decking. On a sloping site with three flights of steps that difference multiplies, so get it into the take-off early rather than discovering it on site.

The six-step fixing sequence

Start clip, tread groove onto the clip, push out to lock, plastic clip in, screw down, cut and fix the last one. Straightforward — but note the steel joist in the accessory list, because it is the part most often left off an order that was quoted from the decking schedule.

The last hundred metres

On a Hütte, an alpine hotel or anything above the road, the delivery does not end at the truck — material goes the rest of the way by service road, by lift, or by hand. That makes the board length and the metre weight planning inputs rather than footnotes: our boards run 2.9 / 3.6 / 4.0 / 5.8 m, and metre weight across the schedule runs 2.00 to 7.27 kg/m. Tell us the access constraint and we will quote the length that actually fits it, rather than the length that packs best in a container.

What the Board Is Made Of

Straight from our own catalogue, with nothing rounded up.

60% wood powder, 30% HDPE, 10% additives

That is the whole recipe, and we would rather publish the additive share than print two numbers that do not add up to a hundred. On the capped range a co-extruded shield wraps a WPC core, and the shield is the wearing layer — it carries the fade and scratch resistance, and at altitude that is the sentence that matters. The material can be recycled and reused at end of life.

Sections and textures

ZSGJ138H23A and ZSGJ138H23C at 138 × 23 mm, ZSGJ138H25 at 138 × 25, ZSGJ140S23 at 140 × 23, ZSGJ140S25 at 140 × 25, ZSGJ145S30 at 145 × 30. Colours — three ranges

Capped co-extrusion: Teak, Antique, Redwood, IPE, Light-grey, Walnut.

Grey lives in the capped range (Antique, Light-grey) and the 3D embossing range (Light Grey, Dark Grey). Order the whole job in one batch — pigment goes into the extrusion, so two runs of the same colour will not be identical, and on a hotel terrace extended in a second season that is the usual source of an argument.

The gaps, and the double joist

5–7 mm between the sides of adjacent boards. About 5 mm between a capped board and a wall. 3–5 mm at butt joints where two board ends meet. Butt joints sit on double joists — each board end gets its own joist, never a shared one. At altitude, where boards are almost always laid cold, work to the upper end of every range.

Accessories, with sizes

Stainless steel start clip, plastic clip, expansion screw, L-shaped corner trim 50 × 50 × 3000 mm, WPC joist 40 × 30 × 3000 mm, aluminium joist 40 × 25 × 2900 mm. Note the aluminium joist is 2900 mm, not 3000 — an easy hundred millimetres to lose when you take off quantities. Stair treads use a steel joist instead; see the stairs section above.

Clearing snow

This comes back to you as a complaint rather than to us, so it is worth saying at the point of sale. A steel-edged shovel dragged across a composite deck scratches the shield, and on a capped board the shield is the wearing layer. Plastic blade, push rather than chop, and leave the last few millimetres to melt. Grit and de-icing salt are hard on screws, clips and post bases long before they affect the board — specify the fixing grade at quotation rather than leaving it to site.

What We Do for a Distributor

A first order can be well under a container

Minimum order is 70 m². Roughly one hotel terrace or a handful of balconies — enough to test a colour, a profile and our paperwork before committing to a 40HQ. Most suppliers at this end of the market quote 1 × FCL and lose the first conversation.

Samples are free

You pay the courier and we credit it in full against your first order. Ask for a sawn sample: the cut end shows whether the cap runs all the way round the section or stops at the sides. If the job is at altitude, ask for a light colour and a dark one and compare them in direct sun.

A real number within 24 hours

Send the specification and the volume, get a per-unit price rather than a range. We need: profile, colour, quantity in m², delivery postcode, the altitude if it is a mountain job, and the date it has to be on the ground.

Private label, market-specific sections, testing on your profile

All three are conversations. We own the tooling, we already run sections cut for particular export markets, and where a project needs a test our documents do not cover we will put your profile through the laboratory — fee up front, credited against the order. Every result we send you names the profile it was measured on.

Near Water, Read the Slip Number Properly

Lakeside terraces around the Salzkammergut, hotel spa areas and pool surrounds all raise the same question, and the useful answer is about method rather than adjectives.

What our result is

R10 under AS 4586-2013 Appendix D, ramp method at 15 degrees, Intertek report 230625005SHF-001, measured on profile ZSGJ138H23A. That is the shod wet method — the number that describes a surface walked in shoes. It belongs to that profile and that method, and we will send the report so your own technician reads the scope on its face.

Barefoot wet areas use a different method and a different scale

A spa terrace or a lakeside jetty in August is a barefoot surface, and barefoot wet areas are assessed by a separate method against its own classification — a figure from one does not convert into the other. Establish which one your project, your client's insurer or the Ziviltechniker is asking for, then ask us for the report that matches. And on any project involving treated water, ask for the warranty schedule before you quote rather than after.

Three Things That Go Wrong When Europeans Import WPC

Not sales copy — these are the three that cost distributors money.

The frame is set out for timber

A joiner spaces joists at whatever timber decking takes, because that is the habit. Composite has a maximum support spacing and it is tighter than timber, and stair treads are tighter again. Get the figure for your profile in writing and put it on the drawing before the frame goes down. Wrong, and the deck does not collapse — it flexes underfoot permanently, and the fix is lifting the boards.

The end gap gets left out

The most expensive of the three, and the most likely at altitude, because boards laid on a cold morning are at their shortest and a gap that looks generous in May is the minimum by August. The figures are in the installation section above — and the double joist under a butt joint is the half of it people forget.

Batch colour is not matched later

Pigment goes into the extrusion, so two runs of the same colour will not be identical. Order the whole job in one batch and keep spares from it. A board replaced in year four will not match — ours or anybody else's. On a hotel extended across two closed seasons, say so at quotation stage so the phases are run as one job.

Warranty, and How a Claim Works

Stepped, not flat

Capped co-extrusion carries 15 years, classic uncapped 10. Both step down by year rather than paying full value throughout: 100% of the value of the affected goods in years 1–3, then 80, 70, 50 and 40% through years 4 to 7, then reducing in bands to 10% in the final years. It covers peeling, cracking and overall uneven fading.

It starts at the destination port

Cover runs from the date the goods arrive and are signed for at the port — not our factory gate, and not the day your customer installs them. On a landlocked route where the goods then travel inland for days, that distinction is worth reading twice, and it works in the distributor's favour.

Certificates are per batch

The schedule that applies is the one on that batch's certificate, which is why the test report shipping with the goods matters. Keep it with the commercial paperwork. If a supplier quotes you a flat 25 years, ask for the schedule — the answer tells you more than the number.
