Rijeka or Koper: Price the Route to the Actual Site

Croatia has its own Adriatic gateway, but the best discharge plan still depends on the project location, sailing and final road or rail movement.

Rijeka is the domestic starting point

For Zagreb, Kvarner and much of the Croatian market, Rijeka is the natural port to price first. Ask for the current sailing, terminal and inland leg as one calculation. Production time, port-to-port transit and final delivery are separate dates, and all three must fit the installation programme.

Koper can be a valid comparison, not an automatic answer

For northern Croatia or a mixed Slovenia–Croatia distribution programme, Koper may be worth comparing when carrier frequency and haulage line up. We will price the requested shipping term; the buyer’s forwarder should compare the complete landed route rather than one attractive freight line.

Holiday openings create a backward planning date

A hotel, campsite or villa terrace cannot be specified by saying “before summer.” Start with the reopening or handover week, subtract inland delivery, port handling, sea transit and production, then leave contingency before the installer arrives. That date belongs in the first enquiry.

Croatia Has Four Different Decking Conditions

The Adriatic Sea, the Dinaric mountains and the continental interior create different exposure and logistics problems inside one market.

Istria and the Dalmatian coast

Strong summer sun, salt air and hospitality cleaning make capped co-extrusion the usual starting point. The composite board does not corrode, but clips, screws, joist connectors and post bases can. Specify every metal component for the real coastal exposure.

Bora-exposed elevated terraces

Around Kvarner, Senj and the Velebit Channel, wind is not a board-selection slogan. Anchorage, pedestal restraint, perimeter details and balustrades belong to the project engineer. We provide profile data and metre weight; the responsible local professional designs the assembly for the site.

Islands and ferry-dependent projects

Hvar, Brač, Korčula and other island sites add one more handling stage. Board length, pallet weight, forklift access, ferry booking and dry storage at the destination should be confirmed before the container is loaded. A damaged pallet on the mainland is inconvenient; on an island it can stop the installation.

Zagreb and the continental interior

Inland Croatia has colder winters, freeze–thaw cycles and less coastal salt exposure. Drainage, ventilation and the support design remain decisive. Water trapped below the boards causes more winter trouble than low air temperature alone.

What the Board Is Made Of, and What the Surface Does

The specification starts with the construction, not the colour name.

60% wood powder, 30% HDPE, 10% additives

On the capped range a co-extruded polymer shield wraps the WPC core. The shield is the wearing layer and carries the fade, stain and scratch resistance. Classic boards are uncapped, which lowers cost but changes the cleaning and weathering expectations.

Sections and textures are separate decisions

A complete specification names the range, profile, surface texture and colour. The full profile schedule is on the models page. Do not carry a span or metre weight from one section to another simply because the face width looks similar.

The gaps are working parts of the deck

Side and end gaps allow thermal movement and carry water off the face. They are not cosmetic tolerances. On exposed coastal or cold inland projects, blocked gaps turn rain and trapped water into standing water; on a long summer terrace, missing end gaps can turn expansion into buckling.

Colour and texture are selected independently from the profile.

Judge the sample where the project will be built

White limestone, full Adriatic sun and shaded urban courtyards do not read the same colour the same way. Put the physical sample outdoors at the project, let it heat through a clear afternoon and compare it again in shade. For barefoot coastal and pool terraces, start with lighter tones because every dark exterior surface absorbs more heat.

Order the whole visible area in one batch

Pigment is mixed into the extrusion run, so separate batches of the same named colour are not identical. Order one visible area together and keep spare boards from that batch. This matters on hotels and spa projects installed in stages.

Where WPC Decking Goes in Croatia

The main project types have different commercial calendars and technical requirements.

Hotels, campsites and holiday villages

High seasonal footfall makes cleaning, spare-board planning and a documented surface choice important. Order the visible area and maintenance spares from one batch, then work backward from the opening date rather than the day the installer becomes available.

Coastal villas, pools and restaurant terraces

Use colour samples outdoors before approval: dark boards can feel hotter in direct Adriatic sun. Pool and restaurant projects also need the required slip test method stated before a profile is promised; a shod wet result is not a barefoot classification.

Island projects and waterfront access

Keep the decking specification separate from marine engineering. We supply boards, clips and profile data; the local designer must address wind, salt exposure, support corrosion and any structure over or beside water. Packaging should be planned for the final crane, forklift or manual handling step.

Urban balconies and roof terraces

Zagreb and coastal-city projects are often limited by threshold height, waterproofing and permissible point loads. Send the available build-up height and whether the membrane may be penetrated before choosing joists, pedestals or deck tiles.

Put these details on the drawing before the frame is built.

Gaps and double joists

5–7 mm between adjacent board sides, about 5 mm at a wall, and 3–5 mm at butt joints are the catalogue starting points. Butt joints sit on double joists so each board end has its own support. Final spacing and support centres must match the exact profile and project conditions.

Accessories, with sizes

The system includes starter clips, plastic hidden clips, expansion screws, 50 × 50 × 3000 mm corner trim, 40 × 30 × 3000 mm WPC joist and 40 × 25 × 2900 mm aluminium joist. The metal grade still has to be specified for coastal or de-icing-salt exposure.

A batch report travels with the goods

Routine checks are recorded before dispatch and the report travels with the shipment. Keep it with the commercial documents; it is often the first document requested on a public or hospitality project.

What We Do for a Distributor

A first order can be smaller than a container

The minimum order is 70 m². That lets a Croatian distributor test one profile, colour, delivery route and documentation pack on a real project before committing to container stock.

Samples are free

You cover the courier and we credit it against the first order. Ask for a sawn sample so the cap construction and core are visible, and compare a light and a dark colour outdoors.

A per-unit quotation within 24 hours

Send profile, colour, quantity, destination, project postcode and required date. We return a unit price and identify which technical documents apply to that exact section.

Private label and regional stock planning

OEM packaging, mixed colour programmes and market-specific sections are available for discussion. If Koper will feed several countries, tell us the split before packing so the pallets and documents follow the distribution plan.

Croatian projects fail when four separate design questions are collapsed into the word “weatherproof.”

UV exposure changes the colour decision

A cap layer carries most of the surface weathering load, but no outdoor colour is frozen forever. Compare physical samples in the intended sun and specify realistic colour tolerance. Darker colours can also run hotter under full summer sun.

Salt exposure changes the metal schedule

WPC does not make the fasteners immune to corrosion. Write the clip, screw, connector, base plate and any exposed aluminium or steel into the coastal specification. The local designer or supplier of the metal system should confirm the grade for the site.

Bora exposure changes the assembly

Wind uplift and lateral loads are about the complete structure. A loose pedestal field, unrestrained edge or inadequately anchored frame cannot be corrected by choosing a heavier board. Elevated coastal decks need local engineering.

Inland freeze–thaw changes drainage priorities

Water trapped in a closed cavity is the winter risk. Maintain fall, keep board gaps open, allow the substructure to ventilate and provide a real outlet below the wearing surface.

Pool and Waterfront Decking: Read the Slip Result Correctly

Croatian hospitality projects often involve pools, spas or wet foot traffic, so the test method matters as much as the result.

What our published result covers

R10 under AS 4586-2013 Appendix D, ramp method at 15 degrees, Intertek report 230625005SHF-001, measured on profile ZSGJ138H23A. It is a shod wet result and belongs to that named profile.

Barefoot wet areas use a different question

A pool surround used barefoot may require another method and scale. Do not convert R10 into a barefoot class or extend it across the catalogue. Send the project requirement and we will state whether the existing evidence matches.

Three Croatia-Specific Procurement Mistakes

These mistakes appear after the board price has already been agreed.

The order is timed to installation, not opening

Hotels and campsites need contingency before guests arrive. Count backward from handover through inland delivery, port handling, sailing and production. A cheap late shipment is not a saving.

Island handling is left to the last carrier

Long pallets, limited forklifts and ferry schedules can change the final kilometre. Confirm pallet length, weight, lifting points and dry storage with the island contractor before we pack.

A coastal quotation lists boards but not metals

Clips, screws, joist connectors and edge details belong in the specification. If the board is suitable but the metal schedule is not, the system is not suitable.

Croatia Project Documentation: Scope Before Claims

We have prepared formal technical scope material for a Croatian customer in another WPC product family. That history proves a document workflow — it does not turn one product’s evidence into another product’s claim.

The tested system stays named

For decking, we provide certificates, declarations and laboratory reports only where the named profile and test scope match. We do not reuse a fencing result as decking evidence or present one report as catalogue-wide approval.

The commercial specification is fixed before production

The quotation should identify the profile, surface, colour, length, accessories, quantity, packaging and agreed Incoterm. That is the reference used for the production order and packing list.

The shipment pack is assembled to the order

Available documents can include the commercial invoice, packing list, applicable CE / CPR file, Declaration of Performance, laboratory reports within scope and the batch test report. Tender requests should be declared at the first enquiry.

Local acceptance remains a local decision

We supply the source documents and exact report numbers. The Croatian importer, specifier or authority decides whether that evidence satisfies a particular project. A responsible supplier should expose the scope boundary, not guess past it.

Warranty, and How a Claim Works

Stepped, not flat

Capped co-extrusion carries a 15-year limited schedule and classic uncapped 10 years. The covered value reduces in bands over time; ask for the schedule rather than reading only the headline number.

It starts at the destination port

Cover runs from the date the goods arrive and are signed for at the destination port. Keep the arrival record, invoice and batch documentation together.

The batch documents matter

A claim is assessed against the product and schedule supplied with that batch. Photographs, installation layout, maintenance history and retained sample boards make the investigation faster.
