Atlantic exposure makes the fixing specification visible

Salt-laden air attacks metalwork before it attacks the composite board. Coastal quotations should name the screw, clip, bracket and subframe material instead of leaving “stainless steel” undefined. The project specifier decides the grade for the exposure; BOHAI supplies the matching system requested.

South-facing decks need a colour conversation

The Algarve and much of the south have warm, dry summers. Dark boards can become uncomfortable where guests walk barefoot, so physical samples, shade, ventilation and time of use matter as much as the colour name.

The north is not the Algarve

Porto, Minho and exposed Atlantic sites see a different moisture pattern from inland Alentejo or a sheltered Lisbon terrace. Drainage, fall, airflow and access for cleaning must be detailed for the site rather than copied from a national generic drawing.

Hospitality projects need replaceable details

Hotels, restaurants and pool terraces cannot close an entire surface for one damaged board. Build access, spare boards from the same batch and removable edge details into the order before installation.

What the Board Is Made Of, and What the Surface Does

The specification starts with the construction, not the colour name.

60% wood powder, 30% HDPE, 10% additives

On the capped range a co-extruded polymer shield wraps the WPC core. The shield is the wearing layer and carries the fade, stain and scratch resistance. Classic boards are uncapped, which lowers cost but changes the cleaning and weathering expectations.

Sections and textures are separate decisions

A complete specification names the range, profile, surface texture and colour. The full profile schedule is on the models page. Do not carry a span or metre weight from one section to another simply because the face width looks similar.

The gaps are working parts of the deck

Side and end gaps allow thermal movement and carry water off the face. They are not cosmetic tolerances. On exposed roof terraces or cold inland projects, blocked gaps turn rain and trapped water into standing water; on a long summer terrace, missing end gaps can turn expansion into buckling.

Judge the sample where the project will be built

Warm urban courtyards, shaded gardens and mountain hospitality sites do not read the same colour the same way. Put the physical sample outdoors at the project and compare it in sun and shade. Dark exterior surfaces absorb more heat, so a colour approved under showroom lighting can behave differently on a south-facing Portuguese terrace.

Order the whole visible area in one batch

Pigment is mixed into the extrusion run, so separate batches of the same named colour are not identical. Order one visible area together and keep spare boards from that batch. This matters on hotels and spa projects installed in stages.

Salt exposure changes the fastener and subframe conversation. Keep the surface dry in the detail, ventilate the build-up and specify every metal component for the actual distance from the sea.

Pools combine barefoot comfort, drainage, cleaning chemistry and the exact slip-test method. A colour sample in direct sun is part of the specification, not a decorative afterthought.

Urban terraces and esplanades

Planters, fixed seating and level changes can trap water and block maintenance access. Detail removable boards, drainage routes and batch-matched spares before the surface is closed.

Gaps and double joists

5–7 mm between adjacent board sides, about 5 mm at a wall, and 3–5 mm at butt joints are the catalogue starting points. Butt joints sit on double joists so each board end has its own support. Final spacing and support centres must match the exact profile and project conditions.

Accessories, with sizes

The system includes starter clips, plastic hidden clips, expansion screws, 50 × 50 × 3000 mm corner trim, 40 × 30 × 3000 mm WPC joist and 40 × 25 × 2900 mm aluminium joist. Fixings and exposed metals still need to suit winter de-icing salt, pool chemicals or other project-specific exposure.

Dry Summers Do Not Make Portugal One Climate

Portugal’s official climate classification places most of the mainland in a temperate, dry-summer family, but the board and build-up still need a site-specific brief.

South and interior: heat, colour and movement

IPMA identifies warm, dry-summer conditions across much of the interior and south. On fully exposed terraces, compare physical samples at the site, prefer lighter tones where barefoot comfort matters, maintain the written end gaps and keep air moving beneath the surface. North and Atlantic edge: water has to leave

A deck can tolerate rain only when the construction gives water a route out. Maintain continuous fall, side gaps, open edges and cleaning access; do not let planters, fascia or sealant turn the cavity into a tray.

Coast: the board is only one material in the system

Salt exposure belongs in the metal specification. Ask the project engineer or specifier to name the correct fastener and subframe grade for the site, and carry the same requirement through clips, screws, brackets and edge details.

Pool Decking: Ask Which Slip Method the Project Requires

“Anti-slip” is not a universal grade. A method, condition, profile and report number belong together.

The result BOHAI can name

R10 under AS 4586-2013 Appendix D, ramp method at 15 degrees, Intertek report 230625005SHF-001, measured on profile ZSGJ138H23A. That is a shod wet ramp result for that named profile.

Barefoot pool areas may ask a different question

Barefoot wet classifications use different methods and scales. Establish what the Portuguese project, insurer or tender actually requires before promising a class. We send the report for the board being quoted so the buyer can verify the method and scope.

Drainage and cleaning are separate from the test number

Keep gaps clear, avoid trapped-water zones, select compatible pool-cleaning chemicals and make edge boards removable where maintenance access is needed. A laboratory result does not repair a poor build-up.

Compare a complete installed square metre: boards, joists or subframe, clips, starter clips, fascia, fasteners, waste and spare boards. A cheap board can create an expensive deck when the system is incomplete.

Accepting a document that names another profile

A certificate or test report is evidence only within its stated scope. Match the code on the quotation, technical sheet, report and packing list before the purchase order is released.

Sines is the deep-water national gateway to test

The Port of Sines describes itself as a deep-water port and its container terminal states that it has direct connections to Portugal’s rail and road networks and weekly links to major production and consumption markets. Capped co-extrusion carries a 15-year limited schedule and classic uncapped 10 years. The covered value reduces in bands over time; ask for the schedule rather than reading only the headline number.

It starts at the destination port

Cover runs from the date the goods arrive and are signed for at the destination port. Keep the arrival record, invoice and batch documentation together.

The batch documents matter
